![]() “We’re really interested in what the implications are when principals teach. Newton is eager to investigate is right here in Alberta with Instructional Leadership, a model of leadership for principals where they’re equally responsible for the instructional program as well as building management. The hope is that research will spread to include 30 schools, including ones in Saskatchewan. “This is a massive issue for principals in general,” he says. Themes of family disruption and acute stress came up, too. “We don’t yet have enough data for a generalized sample, but we found that mostly males were working at the secondary level and that at the primary level the female principals tended to be those without family obligations.” In addition, female principals felt they couldn’t possibly do their jobs if they had a family. In addition, gender themes emerged during interviews. “We don’t know how many principals are out there with this kind of role assignment, and we don’t know how people are managing,” he says. Newton couldn’t find recent data on how many principals were also teaching-he learned it is no longer collected. Their research looked at work/life balance, how principals structured their role within the school and split their time between teaching and administration duties, and how other teachers saw teaching principals in terms of credibility and their ability to lead and model around good instruction. The colleagues interviewed principals at 12 schools in Manitoba and Alberta, including small Hutterite schools with staff compliments as small as 1.5. Newton remembers the large amount of time needed to prepare for the classes, he jokes, he was ‘unqualified to teach.’ Pilot Project Sometimes principals aren’t the master teacher in that area-so the question arises, ‘what’s your credibility when you go into a classroom with another teacher and they see you’re struggling?’” Dr. “That was a challenge, and a lot of time is spent making sure you’re prepared. ![]() “I tried to learn to teach in areas I wasn’t familiar with, especially chemistry, which I hadn’t taken since high school,” Dr. It was after his PhD that he became a principal in rural Star City and began to understand the realities that the ‘teaching principal’ faces. Newton’s doctoral work looked at school boards and the governance of public schools in Saskatchewan. This propelled his Master’s degree (Corporate Involvement in Catholic Education). He began his career teaching music in the public system, then taught band with Saskatoon Catholic Schools. Newton grew up in Saskatchewan (primarily Saskatoon). Dawn Wallin, launched a pilot called “Descriptive Study of the Teaching Principal: Principals in Manitoba and Alberta.” Personal Experience Based on his past personal experience of carrying a 40% teaching load in addition to principal duties, he and a colleague from the University of Manitoba, Dr. Paul Newton learned firsthand the demands of the role of the ‘Teaching Principal.’ It’s a role that perhaps isn’t so unique though less common in urban centers, it’s a reality in many remote Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba schools. Over the years, researchers have proposed a number of exotic particles as candidate components of dark matter, including weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), axions and sterile neutrinos - a hypothetical type of neutrino that emits X-rays when it decays.Far out in the northeast corner of Saskatchewan, Dr. But scientists don't know exactly what it is. In fact, dark matter is thought to make up more than 80 percent of all matter in the universe. But astronomers know that dark matter exists because it interacts gravationally with the "normal" matter we can see and touch. "So we're going to keep testing this interpretation and see where it takes us." ĭark matter is so named because it neither absorbs nor emits light, making it impossible to observe directly. "We know that the dark matter explanation is a long shot, but the payoff would be huge if we're right," study lead author Esra Bulbul, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said in a statement.
